The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has vowed not to ever joke with the welfare of both  staff and student of the university.

The VC, while speaking with journalists in Ilorin said that the welfare of the staff is always uppermost in his mind and he would continue to explore legitimate ways of enhancing it.

Reacting to the  stoppage of the Responsibility and Field Trip Allowances for staff, the Vice-Chancellor said that the decision was not his own making, adding that he only acted on the directive from the Federal Government.

He appealed to all the employees of the University to bear with his administration on the development, adding that the issue was beyond the control of the University management.

On the rumour making the rounds on campus that he had promised to refund the stopped allowances by July this year, Prof. Abdulkareem vehemently denied ever making such promise, explaining that what he said at a recent meeting between management and staff union officials was that the authority would find a means of compensating the University workers, who, he said, have remained loyal and committed to the Unilorin spirit over the years. He said he told the union leaders that such compensation does not necessarily have to come in December; it could be in October or thereabout. The Vice-Chancellor thanked God that the University is now in a good financial standing, saying, “Unlike last year that we were owing contractors and many others, we have paid them up  now, hence the need to be very prudent in our spending.

While saying that he would continue to evolve staff-oriented programmes, Prof. Abdulkareem said his door was always open to everyone who needs either clarification or information.

He disclosed that leaders of the various staff unions on campus would soon be meeting with the Governing Council of the University to discuss welfare matters that will put smiles on the faces of the workers. READ ALSO:Nigeria To Transport 30Million Tons Of Cargoes Annually By Rail—FG

The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the cooperation and sacrifices of staff members since he assumed office some 19 months ago.

He expressed his readiness to always listen to and adopt superior arguments from staff members on how the institution could be better administered and repositioned to ensure improved service delivery and ultimately fulfill its corporate objectives.
